Abstract: Imaginative, Applied and Virtual Technologies
Abstract
Overall this paper shows that computer technologies cannot be isolated from the cultural imagination. The key points include the nature of technology, the relationship between technology and human intelligence, and how the 'reality' of virtual reality mirrors earlier debates in regard to physics and metaphysics. Particular attention is given to (1) how imaginative and applied technologies impact human values and communication, (2) how human concerns and technologies impact our capacity to 'do' science, (3) how technology influences our capacity to think and feel, and (4) how technologies affect our humanness.
